Vape Warning: 5.6M UK Users Risk Herpes from Dirty Devices
Vape Health Alert: 5.6M UK Users Risk Infection

An urgent health alert has been issued for the United Kingdom's 5.6 million vape users, as a new scientific study reveals that the devices can become breeding grounds for dangerous bacteria and viruses, including the herpes simplex virus.

Sharing Your Vape is Not Caring

Researchers are warning that the common habit of sharing vape pens is a significant health risk. A detailed laboratory analysis has found that these devices can harbour bacteria that spread flu, E.Coli, and even lead to herpes virus reactivation and transmission.

The study, commissioned by nicotine pouch brand HAYPP and conducted by microbiologist Reynold Mpofu from BioLabTests, uncovered alarming levels of contamination. Within just 72 hours of first use, bacteria and fungi levels on vape devices were found to be 3,000 times dirtier than a public toilet.

A Perfect Storm for Germs

The mouthpiece of the vape was identified as the primary problem area. 'The absence of protective coverings on most vape mouthpieces, coupled with residual heat and moisture provide the optimal conditions for microbial colonisation,' explained Microbiologist Reynold Mpofu.

The analysis detected the presence of:

  • Staphylococcus and Bacillus bacteria
  • The faecal bacterium E.coli, which can cause UTIs and gastrointestinal distress
  • Yeast and mould that became 'too numerous to count' by the third day of testing

This contamination risk is particularly concerning given that the number of vapers in the UK has now surpassed the number of smokers for the first time on record, representing about 11% of the population.

Protecting Yourself from Vape Germs

To mitigate these health risks, experts recommend a simple cleaning routine. HYAPP suggests wiping down both the mouthpiece and the body of the vape every three days with a cloth dampened in antibacterial cleaner or an alcohol wipe.

For vapes with interchangeable pieces, each component should be removed and cleaned individually, with special attention paid to the mouthpiece. This regular cleaning is crucial for preventing the build-up of dangerous microbes.

The warning comes at a critical time, as the UK faces some of the highest November flu levels in a decade due to the new H3N2 variant. Sharing saliva through vapes significantly increases the risks of passing on respiratory illnesses like Covid-19 and seasonal flu.
