UK Health Agency Issues Urgent Warning Over Contaminated Chicken Linked to E. coli Outbreak
UK warns of E. coli outbreak from contaminated chicken

Public Health England (PHE) has issued an urgent warning after contaminated chicken was linked to a growing E. coli outbreak across the UK. Supermarkets and restaurants have been alerted, with investigations underway to trace the source of the infection.

What’s Happening?

The health agency confirmed that several cases of E. coli O157, a potentially deadly strain, have been reported. The bacteria, often found in undercooked meat, can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and even kidney failure in extreme cases.

Which Products Are Affected?

While PHE has not yet named specific brands, they suspect pre-packaged chicken products may be the culprit. Consumers are advised to:

  • Ensure chicken is thoroughly cooked (no pink meat).
  • Wash hands and surfaces after handling raw poultry.
  • Avoid cross-contamination with other foods.

What Are the Symptoms?

Watch out for:

  1. Severe stomach pain.
  2. Bloody diarrhoea.
  3. Vomiting and fever.

If symptoms persist, seek medical attention immediately.

What’s Being Done?

PHE is working with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to identify suppliers and recall contaminated batches. Retailers have been instructed to remove suspected products from shelves.

This alert follows a similar outbreak last year, raising concerns about food safety protocols in the poultry industry.
