Thomas Markle, the 81-year-old estranged father of Meghan Markle, is reportedly making "good progress" in his efforts to walk again after undergoing a below-the-knee amputation of his left leg. The retired Hollywood lighting director reached a notable milestone last Friday by attending a Valentine's Day party at the rehabilitation centre in the Philippines where he is currently recovering from the surgery.
Celebratory Milestone in Recovery
Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, Mr Markle described the event as "great fun," highlighting his participation in a celebratory lunch with fellow patients and nurses, which featured red roses and chocolates. He expressed gratitude for the care he is receiving, stating, "I'm being very well taken care of and I am grateful for all the wonderful care I am getting."
Health Challenges and Recovery Journey
The amputation was necessitated by a life-threatening incident in December when a massive clot in his left thigh severely restricted blood flow to his foot, nearly proving fatal. Doctors performed the surgery to save his life, and Mr Markle has since been engaged in intensive physiotherapy. He remarked, "I am adjusting slowly and doing a lot of physiotherapy. I am feeling very happy and am making good progress. I have a long way to go but am getting used to my new circumstances."
The Valentine's Day party marked a significant personal achievement, as it was the first time Mr Markle was able to wear everyday attire—jeans and a blue shirt—instead of a hospital gown. He is now undergoing daily physiotherapy sessions with the hope of eventually being fitted for a prosthetic leg.
Family Estrangement and Health History
Despite his recovery progress, Mr Markle has not heard from his daughter Meghan since she sent him a letter shortly after his amputation in December. The estrangement between father and daughter dates back to the eve of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, and he has never met his son-in-law or his grandchildren, Archie, six, and Lilibet, four.
Mr Markle's health has been a persistent concern, with a history of serious medical issues. He experienced two heart attacks just before his daughter's wedding, which prevented his attendance, and suffered a stroke in 2022. These prior health challenges have compounded the difficulties of his current recovery, but he remains optimistic about his rehabilitation journey in the Philippines.
