Nurse Struck Off for Injecting Wrong Patient with Expired Facial Filler
Nurse Struck Off for Wrong Patient Injection with Expired Filler

A nurse who administered an out-of-date facial filler to the incorrect patient has been permanently struck off from the profession. Shona Ovenstone, a 64-year-old company director, conducted the cosmetic procedure without obtaining the legally mandated prescription, breaching fundamental safety regulations.

Serious Breaches of Professional Standards

Ovenstone, based in Leven, Fife, performed the injections while operating her business, SO Youthful Beauty Aesthetics, which continues to advertise its services on social media platforms. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) found that she failed to conduct a necessary face-to-face consultation with the patient prior to the procedure to assess suitability and safety.

Lack of Follow-Up and Dishonesty

Following the injection, the patient experienced painful facial swelling, yet Ovenstone neglected to document a follow-up appointment or provide adequate aftercare. The regulatory watchdog highlighted that she did not inform the patient that the Botox used was intended for another individual, demonstrating a clear act of dishonesty.

In a formal statement, the NMC panel stated: 'Mrs Ovenstone had a duty to be open and honest with the patient and disclose the Botox she was using was for another patient. She also didn’t follow correct procedure for administering that Botox to the patient.'

Disciplinary Action and Public Protection

Ovenstone was summoned to a disciplinary hearing but failed to attend, leading to her removal from the nursing register. The panel concluded that her actions represented significant departures from the expected standards of a registered nurse and were fundamentally incompatible with professional registration.

The statement further emphasised: 'The findings demonstrate Mrs Ovenstone’s actions were serious. To allow her to continue practising would not protect the public, and would undermine public confidence in the profession. The panel determined the appropriate and proportionate sanction is a striking-off order.'

Ongoing Business Operations

Despite the severe professional consequences, SO Youthful Beauty Aesthetics remains operational and actively promotes its aesthetic treatments online. This case underscores critical concerns regarding oversight and accountability within the cosmetic industry, particularly for non-surgical procedures.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to strict medical protocols, including proper patient verification, prescription requirements, and transparent communication, to ensure patient safety and maintain trust in healthcare services.
