Dr Amir Khan, an ITV doctor, has highlighted an unusual symptom of menopause: itchy ears. Speaking on the Lorraine show, he explained that falling oestrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause can affect the skin inside the ear, making it thinner and drier, leading to irritation or itchiness.
Oestrogen receptors are present throughout the body, including in the ears, Dr Khan noted. The hormonal fluctuations can also impact blood flow and nerve signalling, potentially causing diminished hearing, especially in crowded spaces, as well as balance issues such as vertigo or dizziness.
Dr Catherine Smith from the Women’s Clinic in Edinburgh supported this, stating that while hot flushes and night sweats are expected, itchy ears are a lesser-known symptom that many women experience. She reassured women that they are not imagining it and that it is a genuine symptom of perimenopause.
Dr Khan advised anyone experiencing these symptoms to speak to their doctor, as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may help. The NHS lists common menopause symptoms including hot flushes, mood swings, and brain fog, but itchy ears are not typically mentioned.
