Arsenal Consider Formal UEFA Complaint Over Atletico Madrid Pitch

Arsenal are weighing up whether to make an official complaint to UEFA over the condition of the pitch at Atletico Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium. Staff from the north London club were seen measuring the grass length before the match, and they were unhappy with what they found.

UEFA regulations stipulate that grass height must not exceed 30mm, and that the entire playing surface must be cut to the same height. Arsenal believe Atletico's pitch violated these rules, with the grass allegedly too long, potentially to slow down the game.

This is not the first time Atletico have faced such accusations. Barcelona complained about the grass length during their quarter-final, and Tottenham Hotspur claimed the pitch was excessively watered before their last-16 tie. Atletico also watered the pitch at half-time, with more water directed at the end Arsenal were defending.

UEFA's Article 34 states that the home club must ensure the pitch is in the best possible condition and must comply with cutting guidelines. The governing body is already gathering evidence, but it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will formally submit a complaint.

Meanwhile, Atletico manager Diego Simeone's touchline behaviour during a VAR review could also be scrutinised. Referee Danny Makkelie changed his mind on a penalty after reviewing footage 13 times, and UEFA may ask for feedback from the VAR team.
