DWP Cold Weather Payments: Full Eligibility List and £35m Payout Revealed

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has disclosed that almost 1.5 million households have received Cold Weather Payments since December, with over £35 million already distributed this winter season. The scheme, designed to assist vulnerable households during periods of extreme cold, is set to close in a matter of weeks, but the government has now released detailed eligibility criteria and payout figures.

Eligibility Criteria for Cold Weather Payments

To qualify for the £25 payment per seven-day period of freezing temperatures, individuals must be receiving at least one of the following benefits:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest

However, additional criteria apply for some benefits. For example, those on JSA must have a disability or pensioner premium, a disabled child, or a child under five living with them. ESA recipients need to be in a work-related activity or support group, or have a severe/enhanced disability premium, pensioner premium, a disabled child, or a child under five.

Automatic Payments and Exceptions

In most cases, payments are made automatically to eligible households within 14 days of their postcode experiencing extreme weather. This includes nearly 800 postcodes that have been triggered, some multiple times due to Storm Goretti in early 2026. However, exceptions exist: individuals must claim if they qualify due to a new baby or a child under five moving in, and they should inform Jobcentre Plus if on Income Support, JSA, or ESA to avoid missing out.

Universal Credit claimants typically qualify if not employed or gainfully self-employed, provided they or their partner have a health condition limiting work capability or a child under five. Those with a disabled child amount in their claim are eligible regardless of employment status.

Regional Variations and Support Tools

The DWP operates a postcode checker throughout the season, allowing residents to verify if their area has met the temperature threshold for payments. It is important to note that Northern Ireland runs a separate but similar scheme, while Social Security Scotland has replaced Cold Weather Payments with the Winter Heating Payment for eligible claimants since November 2022.

Anyone who believes they are eligible but has not received payment should contact the Pension Service, Jobcentre Plus, or add a note to their Universal Credit journal. The scheme aims to help vulnerable households stay warm during harsh winter conditions, with payments intended to cover extra heating costs.
