A dramatic New Year's Day emergency call on a popular beach turned into a rescue mission for the rescuers themselves, after an ambulance became trapped in the sand with a patient still on board.
High-Tide Drama on Camber Sands
Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service were called to Camber Sands beach in East Sussex in the early hours of January 1st. They were responding to reports of a person in a serious condition. After locating and providing initial treatment to the patient, the crew's emergency vehicle became bogged down in the soft sand, perilously close to the shoreline.
Photographs from the scene showed the seriousness of the situation, with waves from the changing tide lapping at the rear wheels of the stranded ambulance. The vehicle was in imminent danger of being swamped by the incoming sea.
Double Rescue Operation Unfolds
Faced with a rapidly worsening scenario, a swift two-part operation was launched. Firstly, another ambulance was dispatched to the scene. This crew safely transported the original patient to hospital for further care.
Secondly, the local recovery firm, DJ Haulage and Recovery, was called to the beach. Using a fully equipped off-road recovery vehicle, they successfully manoeuvred the trapped ambulance to the safety of the car park before it could be engulfed by the tide. A replacement vehicle was provided for the initial crew, allowing them to continue their shift.
Dean Miller from DJ Haulage and Recovery expressed his surprise, stating: 'I've never seen an ambulance trapped on Camber Sands. But there have been plenty of other vehicles stuck there over the years. The staff were lucky - it was a near miss.'
Local Bafflement and Official Thanks
The unusual sight prompted bemusement from some locals. One questioned the decision to drive onto the sand, while another remarked on the fortunate outcome that the vehicle wasn't buried further by attempts to escape.
A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed the incident, stating: 'We can confirm that one of our ambulances became stuck on Camber Sands while responding to reports of a person in a serious condition.' The service extended its thanks to all those who assisted at the scene.
The event highlights the unpredictable challenges faced by emergency services, even in seemingly straightforward environments, and the vital role played by specialist recovery teams in supporting their work.
