Man Critical After Shark Attack on Australian Island

A man is fighting for his life in critical condition after a suspected shark attack off the coast of Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination in Western Australia.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was attacked by a five-metre white shark near Geordie Bay on Saturday morning, according to authorities. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10am local time on May 16.

Rescue Operation

An air ambulance, rescue helicopter, paramedics, and police all responded to the incident. The man was brought to shore by boat and then transported to hospital in critical condition.

A St John Western Australia ambulance spokesperson confirmed the response, stating: 'Emergency services were advised of a possible shark attack off Geordie Bay at Rottnest Island. No other details are available at this time.'

Surf Life Saving WA reported that a five-metre white shark was sighted approximately 80 metres offshore at the time of the attack.

Popular Tourist Destination

Rottnest Island is a protected nature reserve known for its white sand beaches and population of quokkas, a small marsupial. It attracts numerous tourists each year, particularly from the nearby city of Perth.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development stated it is working with local authorities and will provide further information shortly.

Recent Shark Incidents

This attack follows a series of shark incidents earlier this year in New South Wales. In January, 12-year-old Nico Antic died after being bitten by a shark while swimming with friends at a beach in Sydney. That was the first of several attacks in the region.
