BBC BAFTA-Winner Daniel Postgate Dies at 61 After NHS Letter
Daniel Postgate: BBC BAFTA-winner dies aged 61

The British television community is mourning the loss of Daniel Postgate, the acclaimed BAFTA-winning writer and son of Bagpuss creator Oliver Postgate, who was found dead at his home in Whitstable at the age of 61.

A Heartbreaking Discovery

In June, police discovered Mr Postgate's body in a shed at his property. An inquest into his death has now concluded that he died by suicide. The hearing revealed that this tragic event occurred just one day after he received a letter from the NHS concerning his treatment for a rare blood cancer.

The correspondence confirmed that his recent chemotherapy for myelodysplastic syndrome had been successful. However, it also contained a warning that the cancer could potentially return in the future.

The Struggles Behind the Success

Despite the positive news about his treatment, a report from his family indicated that Daniel was overwhelmed by the fear that his illness was ultimately incurable. The inquest heard that he had been battling underlying depression for nearly four decades.

Adding to this difficult period, he had recently separated from his partner of 35 years, although the split was described as amicable. His brother, Simon, characterised their final phone conversation as "chatty and relaxed".

A Final Message and a Coroner's Conclusion

At the scene, police found a deeply moving suicide note left for his family. In it, he wished them "wonderful lives" and urged them to "remember to love each other".

Coroner Sarah Clarke recorded a conclusion of suicide. She stated that Daniel had taken a "deliberate act" to end his life because he did not want to endure further medical treatment. Ms Clarke told the family that while the specific "why" is always difficult to answer, the evidence clearly showed his intent to avoid facing the potential return of his devastating illness.
