In a deeply personal story from rural Texas, a 23-year-old transgender man is preparing to welcome his baby boy into the world, with plans to place the child for adoption shortly after the birth. Jax Squire, who is around nine months pregnant and lives in Graham, has decided to carry the pregnancy to term, a journey he has documented publicly in the hope of helping others feel less isolated.
A Solitary Decision in a Complex Landscape
Jax Squire discovered he was pregnant in May 2025, a revelation that came just one week after he arrived in Texas and only a week before he was scheduled to begin testosterone therapy. For transgender men, who are biologically female, taking testosterone can prevent pregnancy, as can surgical procedures. Squire, who has not undergone surgical transition, found himself in a challenging situation after his living arrangements unexpectedly changed, leading to a stay in a homeless shelter.
He told the Dallas Morning News that the decision for adoption was made because he "couldn't go through losing another one," having previously experienced a miscarriage. The expecting father is navigating the pregnancy without the involvement of the baby's other parent, which has contributed to feelings of loneliness. "This isn't a topic that's talked about," Squire said. "A pregnant trans guy, are you kidding me?"
Navigating Parenthood and Practical Realities
After two months of working a job that pays $16 per hour and saving diligently, Squire secured his own apartment and began receiving medical care at a local clinic. He has confided in his physician, Dr. Johnson, about his wish to spend the two days with his newborn son allowed by the state before the adoption is finalised, including precious skin-to-skin contact. "I think he'll always treasure that," Dr. Johnson remarked.
While Squire cannot afford to raise the child himself, his hopes for the boy's future are heartfelt. "I want him to be happy, and I want him to feel loved, cared about," he shared. "I want him to go on trips and have adventures and fall off his bike and scrape his knee up." He regularly posts updates on his social media, sharing ultrasound images, photos of his bump, and a clip of the moment he learned the baby's sex.
A Story Set Against a Contentious Political Backdrop
Squire's pregnancy unfolds in Texas, a state where transgender people face significant legislative scrutiny. This year, state lawmakers are considering a controversial bill that could impose jail time for individuals identifying as their true gender on official documents. Furthermore, in 2023, Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed laws banning gender-affirming care like puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors, and barring transgender college athletes from competing in alignment with their gender identity.
Despite this climate, Squire emphasises that his motivation is openness and connection. "I feel like there's a lot of people who have to stay quiet about this kind of thing, and I don't want that," he stated. By sharing his unique journey, he aims to provide visibility and comfort in a conversation that remains largely unheard.
