Netflix's new sci-fi mystery series The Boroughs has quickly become one of the most-watched shows on the platform, currently ranking as the second most popular series among UK subscribers just days after its release. The eight-part thriller is set in a seemingly picturesque retirement community where a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing their remaining time.
Where Was The Boroughs Filmed?
The majority of the series was filmed on location in the desert of New Mexico, USA, primarily in Santa Fe and Albuquerque—the latter famously known as the setting for Breaking Bad. Netflix operates its own large studio complex in Albuquerque, where much of the production took place, including the custom-built houses on the cul-de-sac where the main character Sam and his neighbours reside. These residences were constructed specifically for the show and can be viewed on Google Maps by searching for the studio location.
Real New Mexico Locations Used
The production also took advantage of several real-life spots. The Sandia Mountains appear frequently in the background. The Manor, which serves as a headquarters and houses residents with special needs, was partially filmed at a former Ramada by Wyndham Albuquerque East hotel, which has since closed and been renovated into an apartment complex called Juniper Flats—ironically intended to provide affordable housing for seniors, mirroring the show's theme.
According to Atlas of Wonders, the abandoned desert town featured in episode 2 was filmed at Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe. Established in the 1940s, this Western-style film ranch has a long history in Hollywood and has previously hosted Netflix productions like Godless and American Primeval.
