A father has said he will never forgive a persistent drink-driver who killed him and his two children while they were on a Father's Day walk. David Logan, 47, drove into Joshua Flynn, 37, Coby-Jay, 15, and Skylar, 12, in Abbey Road, Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria, on 21 June 2020.
Logan, who admitted causing death by dangerous driving and driving over the alcohol limit, was jailed for 10 years and 10 months at Preston Crown Court. He also admitted criminal damage relating to the family's dog, which died at the scene, and was banned from driving for 16 years and five months.
The court heard that Logan, a supermarket worker from Dalton, was driving his Peugeot 206 when it mounted the kerb and hit the family. All three died at the scene, along with their Yorkshire terrier Troy. Logan was slurring his speech and staggering when pulled from his car, which was embedded in a tree.
Logan claimed he suffered coughing fits causing him to black out, but the judge ruled this meant he should never have driven. A back calculation of his alcohol intake gave a reading of 141mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. It was his sixth drink-related driving conviction in 20 years.
In a victim impact statement, Emma Flynn, the mother and wife of the victims, said: 'I will never hear my children or husband say 'I love you' ever again. My husband, my kids and Troy, my dog, were brutally ripped away from me. It kills me to know I will never get to see my children grow up.'
Sentencing, Mr Justice Hilliard said Logan 'proceeded as though the road traffic rules simply did not apply to him' and must have known he was putting others at serious risk.
