The Princess of Wales has thrown her support behind a parenting technique known as 'pacing', designed to help adults interact more effectively with young children. The approach encourages parents to slow down and match the speed of their child, allowing them time to process information without becoming overwhelmed.
The technique was highlighted in a series of animated videos launched on Wednesday by The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. Kate, a mother of three, was actively involved in the project, participating in a creative workshop in June where she worked with illustrators and early years practitioners.
One video, titled 'Creating space for connection', explains that while adults are accustomed to speed, babies and young children learn best at a slower pace. The mismatch can lead to frustration, with adults often repeating themselves or raising their voices, which can overwhelm the child further.
The foundation acknowledges that implementing pacing can be challenging in busy everyday situations, such as getting children ready for school. However, it suggests practising the technique during calmer moments like reading or playtime can be beneficial.
Other videos in the series cover topics including emotional brain development, managing big feelings, and navigating emotions. The initiative aims to support early childhood development through nurturing interactions.
