They revealed in October that they had suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage before conceiving Everly, whom they lovingly refer to as their 'rainbow baby'—a term for a child born after a pregnancy loss.

The birth concludes a tumultuous period for the couple, which included a terrifying health emergency for Hayley. In December 2023, while on tour in Washington D.C., the 31-year-old dancer suffered a cranial hematoma—a serious brain bleed—and was rushed into emergency surgery.
Derek later recounted the scare on an episode of Dancing With The Stars, revealing doctors warned him she might not survive or 'be the same person'. Hayley underwent a craniectomy followed weeks later by a cranioplasty to replace part of her skull. Her recovery was remarkable; she relearned to walk and ultimately rejoined Derek to complete their 70-city Symphony of Dance tour by May 2024.

The couple, who celebrated their first wedding anniversary in August 2024, first announced they were expecting in July 2025 with a sonogram video. Despite their excitement, they made a point to honour the baby they lost, stating they were 'excited to be welcoming our rainbow baby so soon'.
