DWP Alert: 1.7 Million Attendance Allowance Claimants Risk Payment Cuts
DWP warns older people over payment changes

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a crucial warning to the more than 1.7 million people across the UK who rely on Attendance Allowance for financial support. Failure to report specific changes in circumstances could lead to payments being reduced or stopped completely.

What changes must you report to the DWP?

Attendance Allowance is a tax-free benefit designed to help older people with the extra costs of a disability or illness. It is paid at two rates: £73.90 per week for those needing help during the day or night, and £110.40 per week for those requiring assistance both day and night, or who are terminally ill.

However, receiving this support comes with a responsibility. Claimants are legally obliged to inform the DWP of certain changes as soon as they happen. The department explicitly cautions that you "could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty" for providing incorrect information or failing to report a change.

You must contact the Attendance Allowance helpline on 0800 731 0122 immediately if any of the following occur:

  • You change your name, address, or bank details.
  • You are admitted to hospital or a care home.
  • Your condition changes or the level of help you need alters.
  • You plan to leave the country for more than four weeks.
  • You go into prison or your immigration status changes.
  • A medical professional says you may have 12 months or less to live.
  • You want to stop receiving the benefit.

When to consider reporting a change for more support

The DWP also highlights that you should proactively report a change if you feel your needs have increased. This is vital even if you are not currently receiving the extra help you require.

You may be eligible for a higher rate of payment if you need more assistance or supervision due to your condition. This includes help with personal care tasks like dressing, eating, washing, or using the toilet. It also covers needing help to ensure your safety.

This guidance applies not only to those with physical disabilities but also to individuals with mental health conditions, learning difficulties, or sensory conditions such as being deaf or blind. If completing personal tasks takes longer, causes pain, or requires physical aid, you should contact the helpline.

Attendance Allowance supports over 50 physical and mental health conditions, from arthritis and heart disease to dementia and Parkinson's. If an existing condition worsens or a new one develops, it is essential to keep the DWP informed.

How to report a change and protect your payments

To avoid any disruption to your finances, you can reach the Attendance Allowance helpline from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6pm. Full guidance on reporting changes is available on the GOV.UK website.

The benefit is paid every four weeks, meaning recipients can receive either £295.60 or £441.60 per payment period. This money can be spent as the claimant sees fit, often helping them maintain their independence and live at home for longer.

If you are uncertain whether a change in your life affects your entitlement, the safest course of action is to always contact the DWP for clarification. Taking prompt action ensures you continue to receive the correct level of support.
