A 30-year-old man from New Jersey was gored by a bison in Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday after a group of visitors approached the animal too closely, park officials said.
The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. in the Old Faithful area. The man sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Officials have not released his name, citing an ongoing investigation.
This is the second bison attack in Yellowstone this spring. On May 7, a 47-year-old man from Florida was gored in the Lake Village area and suffered minor injuries.
Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other wild animal. They can run up to 35 mph and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Park regulations require visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison and other large herbivores.
“Wild animals can be aggressive if people don’t respect their space,” Yellowstone officials said in a statement. “Bison will defend their space when threatened.”
