A massive fire at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in the Dominican Republic has left nearly 1,700 tourists evacuated, with many losing their passports and other travel documents. The blaze, which broke out on Friday, June 19, 2026, resulted in the death of one guest, Italian holidaymaker and reality TV star Francesca Valentino, 46. Three others were hospitalized, and six more received treatment at the scene.
Passports Reduced to Ash
Hotel executive Amanda Santana confirmed that many guests lost their identity documents, including passports, in the fire. "Unfortunately, they lost their identity documents, including their passports. We have been coordinating with the embassies and governments of those countries to facilitate the entry of those guests," Santana told the Daily Mail. Hotel staff are working with police and local authorities to assist stranded tourists in obtaining replacement paperwork to return home.
Evacuation and Relocation
Emergency crews responded to the fire at the independently owned and operated resort last Friday. All guests and staff were safely evacuated, according to a statement from Viva by Wyndham. Hundreds of tourists have since been relocated to nearby hotels and alternative lodgings. The resort remains closed until further notice.
Cause of the Fire
The Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Centre (COE) reported that preliminary findings suggest the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds and the flammable palm roofing used in parts of the complex. Residents on social media noted that the magnitude of the blaze exceeded the capabilities of initial emergency crews, with one user posting on X: "Although fire trucks are already on the scene, the magnitude of the blaze exceeds the available equipment and greater support is required."
Impact on Tourism
The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean's most visited tourist destination, attracting over 5.6 million visitors in the first five months of 2026. The Viva Dominicus Beach, located in the former fishing village of Bayahibe, underwent major refurbishments in recent years and shares facilities with its sister property, Dominicus Beach.
