Paul O'Grady, who would have turned 68 today, was a passionate animal lover who dedicated much of his life to rescuing and rehoming animals. The TV presenter, known for his work with Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and ITV's For the Love of Dogs, had five rescue dogs—Nancy, Arfur, Conchita, Eddie, and Sausage—at the time of his sudden death in March 2023. He also cared for chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, and alpacas at his home with husband Andre Portasio.
What Happened to Paul O'Grady's Animals?
Close friend Malcolm Prince shared details about the animals' relocation. The dogs are now cared for by Paul's friend Moira, as Paul had specifically requested. The pigs were moved to a sanctuary and are reportedly very happy. Other animals, including alpacas and chickens, have been rehomed to various locations. The house is up for sale, making it impractical to keep the animals there.
Paul's Dedication to Animal Welfare
Paul was an ambassador for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and a patron for Orangutan Appeal UK and Wildlife SOS. He often got up at 5 a.m. to feed and care for his animals, despite disliking early mornings. His friend Malcolm recalled, "He was a real-life Doctor Dolittle," noting how Paul would talk to his dogs and sometimes they seemed to talk back.
The star's legacy continues through the loving homes now caring for his animals.
