Orphaned Baby Monkey Punch Finds Comfort Among Troop After Viral Bond With Stuffed Toy

An abandoned baby monkey who captured hearts worldwide after forming a bond with a stuffed orangutan toy has begun integrating with his own kind at a Japanese zoo. Punch, a Japanese macaque at Ichikawa City Zoo, went viral earlier this month for clinging to the plush toy, nicknamed “Ora-mama”, after being rejected by his biological mother shortly after his birth in July last year.

Zoo officials report that Punch has started engaging with other monkeys, marking a significant step in his social development. Caretakers observed another monkey grooming him, a behaviour that signals trust and acceptance within primate groups. Videos shared by the zoo show Punch playing with young monkeys and climbing onto their backs, with one older monkey even embracing him.

Shumpei Miyakoshi, a caretaker, said: “He’s actively engaging with other monkeys, and I can feel he’s growing up. Even when scolded by other monkeys, he quickly recovers. He’s mentally strong.” Earlier, keeper Kosuke Shikano noted the toy’s fur and monkey-like appearance likely provided Punch with a sense of security.

Social media users expressed pride in Punch’s progress, with one writing on Instagram: “It’s hard making friends! Punch is so brave! So proud of him.” IKEA Japan reportedly donated several stuffed toys to the zoo during a recent visit by its president, Petra Fare. Punch’s story follows the global fame of other baby animals, such as king penguin chick Pesto and pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng, who became viral sensations in 2024.
