Alabama HOA Plan to Gas Hundreds of Geese Sparks Protests and Outrage
Alabama HOA Plan to Gas Geese Sparks Protests

A homeowners association in Madison, Alabama, has ignited protests and calls for humane wildlife management after voting to kill hundreds of local Canada geese. The Edgewater neighborhood HOA plans to euthanize the geese at Lady Ann Lake by gassing them with carbon monoxide, a method previously used in 2020.

Protests Erupt Over Culling Plan

Dozens gathered in the Edgewater neighborhood to oppose the non-unanimous decision. They advocated for alternatives such as using horns to scare geese or relocating them. Resident David Field launched a Change.org petition to stop the culling, stating, "Our family moved here to enjoy nature. The HOA's plan to slaughter these birds is abhorrent and unnecessary."

HOA Defends Decision

HOA board president Brian Goodwin told WAFF 48 that 226 geese reside at the lake, posing risks to water quality, public health, and safety. The HOA claims non-lethal methods like feces cleaning, predator deterrents, and sprays failed. Board member Jack Hollum, who voted against the plan, described the gassing as "an agonizing death" because geese can hold their breath for 45 minutes.

Legal and Ethical Concerns

Canada geese are federally protected, but culling is legal with a USDA permit. The HOA contracts USDA Wildlife Services for the extermination. Resident Natalie Tidwell denied the geese cause problems, saying, "I've never had issues. It's not a problem warranting lethal measures." Peta opposes culling, calling it a short-term fix.

The HOA defended the vote in a statement to FOX54, citing years of unsuccessful non-lethal management and consultation with wildlife officials. They argue the goose population exceeds sustainable levels, causing environmental and health impacts.
