The mysterious note that started it all
Sarit Ray, a resident of Singapore, discovered a handwritten note from a neighbour he had never met, containing what some might consider an unusual request. The message asked if he would "occasionally water the plants if they look a bit sad" while the neighbour was away.
The note included the neighbour's flat number and contact details, establishing what would become the foundation of their unique relationship. Despite the initial strangeness of the situation, Sarit decided to honour the request.
Botanical expertise meets neighbourly duty
Fortunately for both the mysterious neighbour and her greenery, Sarit possessed considerable plant care knowledge. He described on his Substack how he found half a dozen houseplants lined up by the window, just five steps from his own door.
"I watered them every few days (plants in shade; so overwatering would kill them faster than neglect)," Sarit explained, demonstrating his understanding of proper plant maintenance. He even went beyond the basic request by fetching plates from his own home to place underneath plants that lacked proper drainage.
Despite his expertise, not every plant survived the arrangement. Sarit reflected philosophically on one particular variegated plant from which he took a cutting: "it didn't survive, but when you keep plants, you make peace with loss."
The evolution of an unconventional friendship
The story took another heartwarming turn when Sarit discovered a bag of artisan coffee left outside his door, which he presumed was a thank-you gift from his anonymous neighbour. This exchange of plant care for quality coffee established what Sarit calls "the code of the urban village."
When the story gained traction on Threads, commenters celebrated the unusual connection. One user remarked: "What a great way to make a safe connection at home," while another expressed: "I'm jealous as I wish you were my neighbour."
Despite the opportunity to formally introduce himself, Sarit expressed contentment with maintaining their current arrangement. "No knocks, no awkward chats. Just plants and coffee..." he wrote, highlighting the comfortable simplicity of their connection.
