A large wildfire continues to ravage the Welsh countryside near Harlech, having burned approximately 2,000 acres since it first ignited on Sunday and reignited on Wednesday. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews are battling the blaze in challenging conditions, with the fire now approaching forestry areas.
Firefighters Face Difficult Terrain
The fire is located in the Rhinogydd mountains near Cwm Bychan lake. A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service stated: "A significant proportion of the affected area is inaccessible by both vehicle and on foot, making firefighting operations particularly demanding. The fire is also approaching areas of forestry, which is being closely monitored as part of the ongoing response."
As a result of the difficult terrain, the fire service requested aerial support through Natural Resources Wales (NRW). While the request has been approved, helicopter support is not expected until early next week due to high demand from other wildfire incidents across the UK.
No Evacuations Yet
As of Thursday, farms and properties near the fire do not require evacuation, though the situation is being closely monitored. Crews are maintaining contact with nearby properties and a local campsite. Local roads have been closed to assist emergency response efforts.
Jody McEachern, head of prevention at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Our focus remains on containing the fire as effectively as possible, while monitoring changing conditions and protecting the surrounding environment. This incident highlights the importance of the close working relationship between emergency services, Natural Resources Wales and other partner organisations."
Additional Fires in the Region
The fire service is also monitoring a situation on the mountain near Capelulo and at Braichmelyn Forest, Bethesda. Crews were called to a grass fire at Bagillt last night, which has been brought under control. The public is urged to avoid these areas while firefighting operations continue.
Smoke may be visible in nearby communities. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed until smoke dissipates, then ventilate homes. Further health advice is available from Public Health Wales.
