Fire Chief Praises Crews in Dovestone Blaze Seventh Day

A fire chief has praised the 'amazing commitment' of crews battling the fire near Dovestone Reservoir as it enters its seventh day. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been tackling the blaze since it broke out last Saturday night, following reports of youths setting off fireworks in the area.

Crews from Across the Country Assist

Firefighters, game keepers and other partners have been working day and night to contain the blaze, which bosses have said is in 'deep moorland' that is difficult to access. GMFRS' incident commander Paul Fearnhead said the fire is 'progressing slowly'.

"We are containing the fire currently, and working with partners to resolve this incident and slow its spread," he said. "On the top of the plateau here are large operations from firefighters across the country supporting our efforts."

Challenging Conditions

The roads near the reservoir are narrow, and Fearnhead urged the public to stay away. "The roads are very narrow so anyone that can stay away is really beneficial," he added.

"Our staff have been amazing, the commitment they have shown. They are working tremendously hard to ensure that we slow the spread and stop the progress. I am really really proud of the work they have put in. They are great characters keeping positive and turning up to resolve this."

Separate Blaze at Tintwistle

At the same time, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a separate fire close to Tintwistle Reservoir, with their helicopter being used to aid operations at Dovestones as well.

Specialist vehicles are needed to access the fireground, and crews are working in 'extremely challenging' conditions. The fire has been burning for seven days, with no immediate end in sight.
