Keep Home Cool in Summer with This Easy 10-Second Task, No Fan Needed
Easy 10-Second Task to Keep Home Cool Without Fan

Keeping your home cool during the summer can be a challenge, especially without a fan or air conditioning, but there's an easy solution that takes just 10 seconds. British homes are built to retain warmth, making them feel stuffy in hot weather, while running a fan continuously drives up energy costs. However, Micaela, founder of Stylish London Living, reveals a simple strategy: open your windows at the optimal moment.

The Simple 10-Second Task

Micaela explains: "I keep all windows and curtains closed during the day when the sun is at its strongest, then open them wide once the temperature drops in the evening." During peak heat hours, typically between 11am and 6pm, sunlight streaming through windows rapidly warms your home. Closing curtains during daylight acts as insulation to minimize heat gain, while opening windows in the evening lets trapped warm air escape. This straightforward routine lowers both temperature and humidity, ensuring comfort throughout summer.

Additional Cooling Tips

If you have a fan, use it in the evening rather than during the day to expel warm air more efficiently. Placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan creates a makeshift air conditioning unit, quickly cooling your home and improving sleep. Keep interior doors open at night to allow air circulation, and move bulky furniture and heavy curtains aside to avoid blocking airflow. It's crucial to shut windows and draw curtains by around 8am to keep heat at bay and maintain the strategy's effectiveness.

Invest in Blackout Curtains

For rooms receiving intense sunlight, consider blackout curtains to reduce heat buildup. If you open curtains, spend time in north-facing rooms, which stay naturally cooler. Micaela notes, "Your home has natural cooling potential that you might not be utilising! During extreme heat, we relocate our daily activities to north-facing spaces."
