Shoppers purchasing avocados at supermarkets are being urged to follow a strict 'five-day rule' to guarantee maximum freshness and reduce food waste. The rule, recommended by Fresh Avocados – Love One Today, advises buying firm, green avocados exactly five days before the planned consumption date, as this typically allows sufficient time for the fruit to ripen at room temperature.
How the Five-Day Rule Works
According to the nutrition website, unripe, firm green avocados can be purchased four to five days ahead of an event. Ripe fresh avocados that yield to gentle pressure should be eaten within a day or two. For events scheduled four to five days out, purchasing firm avocados is recommended, as they take four to five days to ripen at room temperature, making them perfect for celebrations.
The website cautions shoppers to monitor the fruit closely, as kitchen temperature can accelerate ripening. If avocados begin to yield to gentle pressure, they should be placed in the refrigerator to slow the process.
Identifying Ripeness Stages
Fresh avocados that are almost ripe feel less firm, are darker in colour, and do not quite yield to gentle pressure. At this stage, shoppers are advised to wait one to two days for full ripening; otherwise, the flesh inside will remain hard and difficult to mash. When avocados are almost black with only a hint of green and yield to pressure, they are at peak ripeness and should be eaten immediately.
The colour of avocados can vary by variety – Fuerte, Ettinger, Reed, and Sharwill avocados stay green when ripe – so firmness should also be used as a guide. Overripe avocados feel mushy, have deep indentations, and display darker yellow or brown flesh, making them best avoided.
Reducing Food Waste
By following the five-day rule, shoppers can cut down on food waste caused by prematurely cut or spoiled fruit. The advice comes as part of broader efforts to help consumers make informed choices and enjoy avocados at their best quality.
