Randolph Mantooth, 'Emergency!' Star, Dies at 80

Randolph Mantooth, best known for his iconic role as paramedic John Gage on the NBC series Emergency!, has died at the age of 80. His brother, Donald Mantooth, confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter, stating that Randolph passed away on Thursday at a hospice facility in Ventura, California. Donald revealed that his brother had been ill for a number of years and kept getting thinner and thinner.

Career Breakthrough and Impact

Born in Sacramento in 1945, Mantooth studied at Santa Barbara City College before earning a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He appeared in episodes of McCloud, Marcus Welby, M.D., and Adam-12 before landing his breakthrough role in 1972 on Emergency!, a medical drama that ran for six seasons. The show profoundly affected him, leading him to become an advocate for firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and emergency medical services providers. He served as a spokesperson for the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) on Health and Safety and was a lifetime member of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Later Roles and Tributes

After Emergency! ended in 1978, Mantooth appeared in Charlie's Angels, Fantasy Island, and The Fall Guy. He later starred in the soap opera Loving and its spin-off The City, as well as As the World Turns and One Life to Live. In 2011, he portrayed Charlie Horse in two episodes of Sons of Anarchy.

He took me under his wing as he did to most young actors he ever met. He treated me with respect and kindness but most of all friendship.' She added, 'He was a friend to so many, a true great friend. Most especially to his wife and partner Kristen Connors. He was loved, truly loved and he will be missed.'
