Wooden floors often become dull and scratched in summer due to sunlight and dust, but a simple homemade solution with olive oil can restore their shine without expensive products, according to Elizabeth, founder of At Home On The Prairie.
Why Summer Damages Wooden Floors
Intense sunlight breaks down the floor's finish, making it look tired. Dust and pollen act like sandpaper, gradually wearing down the wood. Static electricity also attracts extra debris, increasing dust buildup.
Olive Oil as a Natural Polish
Elizabeth recommends a mixture of olive oil, white vinegar, castile soap, and water. She explains: "This solution will not only clean wood floors, but it also uses olive oil to naturally polish and shine them up at the same time! But unlike commercial wood polish, olive oil doesn't leave a residue that builds up over time."
Olive oil conditions the wood, enhances the grain, and adds moisture to eliminate static charge, reducing dust attraction. It also helps diminish minor scratches.
Homemade Floor Cleaner Recipe
Ingredients: one tablespoon olive oil, four teaspoons white vinegar, one teaspoon castile soap, 400ml water, and an empty spray bottle. White vinegar's acidity breaks down dust and grease, while castile soap lifts dirt effectively.
Application Method
First, vacuum or sweep the floor thoroughly, including under rugs and furniture. Then, mix ingredients in a spray bottle and shake well. Lightly mist the floor in small sections, using a dry mop or cloth to polish in circular motions. Avoid saturating the wood to prevent damage.
This method leaves floors gleaming and reduces the need for frequent vacuuming, making it ideal for summer maintenance.
