Wooden floors can look dull and dirty in summer, but a simple homemade spray using olive oil restores their shine without expensive products, according to cleaning expert Elizabeth, founder of At Home On The Prairie.
Why Wooden Floors Lose Shine in Summer
Intense sunlight breaks down the floor's finish, while increased dust and pollen act like sandpaper, wearing down the wood. Static electricity in dry conditions attracts additional debris, making homes dustier.
Elizabeth recommends a solution of olive oil, white vinegar, and castile soap. She says: "This solution will not only clean wood floors, but it also uses olive oil to naturally polish and shine them up at the same time! But unlike commercial wood polish, olive oil doesn't leave a residue that builds up over time."
How Olive Oil Works
Olive oil lubricates the wood and enriches the grain, making floors look richer and warmer. It also adds moisture to eliminate static charge, keeping floors cleaner longer and reducing the need for vacuuming. Additionally, it helps fade minor scratches.
DIY Floor Cleaner Recipe
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 teaspoons white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon castile soap
- 400ml water
- Empty spray bottle
White vinegar's acidity breaks through dust, pollen, and greasy residue, and evaporates quickly to avoid streaks. Castile soap, made from vegetable oils, tackles dirt and stains effectively.
Method
First, thoroughly vacuum or sweep the floor, including under rugs and in corners. Skipping this step can cause scratches as dust particles drag across the surface.
Pour all ingredients into a spray bottle, secure the lid, and shake well. Lightly spritz the solution onto the floor in small sections—avoid over-saturating, as excess water can warp wood. Buff with a dry mop or cloth in a circular motion to leave the floor pristine.
