A baby girl born at just 22 weeks gestation, weighing only 511 grams—half the weight of a standard bag of sugar—has defied the odds and returned home after 142 days in neonatal care. Hope Goldie was born on December 8, 2025, and is among the few infants born at this early stage who survive to leave hospital.
Hope's Journey
Parents Sharon Fernie and Gary Goldie, from Glenrothes, Fife, described their experience as filled with uncertainty, taking each day as it came. Hope spent her first 85 days in specialist care in Glasgow before being transferred to the Neonatal Unit at Victoria Hospital in Fife, where staff continued to support her recovery.
Staff at the unit called Hope's progress a 'miracle.' Mum Shannon said: "We didn't know what the future would hold when Hope was born. Every day felt like a milestone and every small step forward was a reason to celebrate. Bringing her home was a moment we dreamed about for months. It was the most challenging time of our lives."
Giving Back
Inspired by their experience, Shannon and Gary launched Hope's Tiny Tapes, a business producing specialized, skin-safe medical adhesives used to secure nasal cannulas for babies and young children needing oxygen support. The tapes prevent tubing from shifting or rubbing against the skin.
The couple aims to raise funds and donate money to NHS Fife's Neonatal Unit, helping other families facing similar journeys.
Hospital Staff Praise
Amy Moran, Senior Charge Nurse in the Neonatal Unit at Victoria Hospital, said: "Hope's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Babies born this early face enormous challenges, and every milestone she reached was a testament to her determination, the love and dedication of her family, and the expert care provided by the neonatal teams. We are delighted for Shannon, Gary, Rome, Remy and, of course, Hope herself. Seeing Hope thrive at home with her family is exactly why we do what we do."
