Lord Haskins: A Yorkshire Farmer with a Global Vision and Social Justice Legacy

More than four decades ago, a chance encounter on a public footpath in the village of Skidby, East Riding of Yorkshire, introduced me to Christopher Haskins, a man who defied the stereotype of a local farmer. Walking my dog across his farm, I quickly realised he was no ordinary agriculturalist.

An Unconventional Farmer with Irish Roots and Global Connections

Lord Haskins, as he later became, possessed a distinctive Irish accent that hinted at his diverse background. His sheepdog, named Jomo after Jomo Kenyatta, the leader who guided Kenya to independence, was just the beginning of his international outlook. Over the years, I had the privilege of meeting him alongside figures like Tutu, Tambo, and Mbeki, reflecting his deep engagement with global affairs.

Together with his wife, Gilda, Haskins had been a fervent campaigner against apartheid in South Africa since their student days in Dublin. This commitment to social justice was a cornerstone of his life, shaping his actions and conversations.

Wide-Ranging Conversations and Shared Interests

Our discussions spanned a broad spectrum of topics, from the leisurely pursuits of cricket and the birdlife on his farm to more pressing issues. We often talked about the city of Hull, where we both worked, and his involvement with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, for which he and Gilda had marched actively.

Politics, particularly within the Labour party, was another frequent subject, showcasing his dedication to progressive causes. His multifaceted interests made every conversation enriching and thought-provoking.

A Recognition of Vision and Advocacy

In 1999, I had the honour of proposing him for an honorary degree at the University of Hull. I described him as "a businessman of vision and advocate for social justice," a title that encapsulated his remarkable contributions. Lord Haskins' legacy extends far beyond the fields of Yorkshire, touching on global activism, political engagement, and a relentless pursuit of equality.

His life serves as an inspiration, reminding us that even in rural settings, one can champion profound change and foster a better world through compassion and action.
