Alan Titchmarsh Urges Gardeners to Prune Roses Now for Summer Blooms
Alan Titchmarsh: Prune Roses Now for Summer Blooms

Renowned gardener and TV presenter Alan Titchmarsh has issued expert advice for gardeners to prune their roses now to guarantee a spectacular display of blooms throughout the summer. In a TikTok video, he demonstrated how to identify dead stems versus old stems, a crucial step for healthy rose growth.

How to Spot Dead Stems

Titchmarsh explained that dead stems have no living wood, while older stems often have green young shoots at the top. Inspecting the bark for green colour indicates the plant is alive; brown stems suggest it has died. Regular pruning is vital for rose prosperity.

Pruning Shrub Roses Correctly

The gardening expert cautioned against cutting shrub roses down to knee height, which is the method for bush roses. Instead, he advised tipping them back and thinning the framework to remove excess old stems that impede growth. This revitalises the plant and stimulates new growth. Major pruning should be done between February and March after the last frost.

Benefits of Proper Pruning

Titchmarsh created a well-spaced branch framework to ensure consistent airflow, reducing the likelihood of mildew and black spot. In a separate video, he emphasised that roses are hungry, hardworking plants requiring plenty of moisture and nutrients. He recommended improving soil with generous amounts of organic matter, such as homemade compost or well-rotted material, to enhance moisture retention and nutrient supply.

Soil Tips for Healthy Roses

Titchmarsh noted that roses thrive in heavy clay soils due to moisture retention, while light sandy soils can dry out quickly, leading to problems like mildew and black spot. He urged gardeners to be generous with soil improvement, promising stronger growth, healthier plants, and a spectacular flower display throughout the season.
