Nicholas Ralph, the beloved star of Channel 5's hit period drama All Creatures Great and Small, has bravely shared the profound personal loss that brought production to an abrupt and unexpected halt.
The actor, who embodies the iconic role of veterinarian James Herriot, was forced to immediately leave the show's picturesque Yorkshire Dales set following the sudden passing of his cousin. Ralph described his cousin as being "like a brother" to him, making the loss particularly devastating.
A Sudden and Heartbreaking Departure
Ralph recounted receiving the tragic news while deeply immersed in filming. The production team, understanding the severity of the situation, did not hesitate to shut down immediately. This swift action allowed Ralph to travel to Scotland to be with his grieving family without delay.
"The producers were so understanding," Ralph shared. "They just said, 'Go'. There was no question about it." This period away from the set provided crucial time for mourning and being with loved ones during an incredibly difficult time.
The Challenge of Returning to Skeldale House
Returning to work presented its own unique emotional challenges. Ralph confessed that stepping back into the warm, cheerful world of Skeldale House and the familiar character of James Herriot required a significant mental shift.
"You have to go from that… to then being on set, and it's all very warm and happy," he explained, highlighting the stark contrast between his personal grief and the professional demands of his role. The actor credited the incredibly supportive cast and crew, calling them "so lovely," for helping him through this challenging transition back to work.
