50p Spice Turmeric Could Help Arthritis and Depression in 14 Days

A common kitchen spice costing as little as 50p is being touted as a natural remedy for arthritis and depression. Dr Eric Berg, a medical professional with millions of online followers, claims that consuming turmeric daily for two weeks can significantly reduce inflammation and support brain health.

Dr Berg attributes the benefits to curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, describing it as “one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories.” He says it can help with conditions such as bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis, and also acts as a natural antidepressant while aiding liver detoxification.

Arthritis affects over 10 million people in the UK, according to the NHS, while depression is estimated to affect one in six adults. Scientific reviews, including one in the journal Foods, confirm curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties, though absorption can be low without enhancers like black pepper.

Research in the Journal of Affective Disorders found curcumin supplementation led to small to moderate improvements in depression symptoms compared to placebo. However, researchers caution that turmeric should not replace prescribed antidepressants and more studies are needed.

Dr Berg also claims turmeric boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports nerve cell growth. The Alzheimer’s Society notes that low BDNF levels are linked to depression and neurodegenerative diseases. While turmeric is safe in cooking, high-dose supplements may interact with medications, so the NHS advises consulting a GP before starting new supplements.
