Screenwriter David Farr recently disclosed the highly unusual origin of the new season's storyline. "I had a very clear image one night of a black car driving over the hills in Colombia, towards a boy," he recounted.

The new series picks up eight years after the explosive events of season one. Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) is now living under the alias Alex Goodwin, working as a low-level MI6 officer managing a quiet surveillance unit in London. This uneventful existence is violently shattered by an encounter with a dangerous new figure, Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva).
Thrust back into the perilous world of intelligence, Pine's mission leads him to Colombia.
