Fans of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things received an unexpected Christmas gift when the streaming platform dropped multiple episodes from season five's volume two on 25 December. The new instalments delivered high-stakes drama and pivotal character moments, none more emotional than the fate of the long-standing couple, Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers.
The Dramatic 'Un-Proposal' Scene
In a tense, near-death scene set within the toxic Hawkins lab in the Upside Down, the fan-favourite pair, portrayed by Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton, shared a raw and heartbreaking moment. Trapped and believing they are about to die, they finally voice long-held secrets: Nancy confesses she hates The Clash, while Jonathan admits he never applied to Emerson College and doesn't enjoy reading her articles.
In a shocking turn, Jonathan then produces an engagement ring from his pocket. However, instead of a traditional proposal, he asks, "Nancy Wheeler, will you not marry me?" She accepts this poignant 'un-proposal', they share a kiss and declare their love, only to subsequently realise the deadly substance around them has hardened and they have survived.
Creators Confirm It Was a Breakup
In an interview with People published on Thursday, series co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer clarified the intent behind the emotionally charged scene. "That's a breakup," Matt stated unequivocally. "They are broken up."
The brothers explained they had known for some time that the couple, who have been dating since season two, would part ways. "We all felt that Nancy needed to end up on her own and be independent and have an opportunity to find herself," Matt said, noting that few people end up with their high school sweetheart. He added that their shared traumatic experiences had created a "trauma bond" that ultimately led to their separation.
Linked to the Final Battle
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, the Duffer brothers linked this character resolution to the overarching plot of the final season. They aimed to have each character confront their internal fears before the climactic battle. "We wanted to put them in a life-or-death situation where it's their last opportunity to confess," Matt explained. Ross added that the scene explored how intense shared experiences can sometimes stifle individual growth, a dynamic that felt true for both Nancy and Jonathan.
Interestingly, while their on-screen romance has concluded, the actors Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton remain a couple in real life.
The entire fifth season of Stranger Things, including both volumes, is now available for streaming on Netflix. The epic two-hour series finale, titled 'The Rightside Up', is set to premiere in select cinemas and on Netflix on 31 December.
