The stars of the highly anticipated new thriller Steal gathered for a special BAFTA screening on January 12, just over a week before the series launches globally on Prime Video. The show promises to deliver a tense, modern heist narrative centred on an ordinary woman thrust into extraordinary danger.
What is Steal about and when does it premiere?
The series follows Zara, played by Sophie Turner, an office worker at Lochmill Capital, a pension fund investment company. Her routine day is shattered when a violent gang seizes control of her workplace, taking employees hostage and forcing Zara and a close friend to comply with their demands.
Meanwhile, Detective Chief Inspector Rhys is tasked with hunting down the criminals responsible for stealing billions of pounds. Complicating his investigation is his status as a recently relapsed gambling addict, forcing him to juggle his personal financial struggles with the complex hidden agendas at the heart of the massive crime.
Steal will make its global debut on Prime Video on Wednesday, January 21, with new titles typically dropping at midnight. The series consists of six hour-long episodes, all of which will be released at once for binge-watching.
Who stars in the Prime Video thriller?
The series boasts a impressive British cast led by Sophie Turner. The 29-year-old actress, who rose to fame as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, takes the lead as Zara. Turner is set to play Lara Croft in an upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation for Prime Video.
She is joined by Archie Madekwe (30), known for See and Saltburn, who plays Zara's best friend Luke. Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (37), recognised for Wolf Hall and The Queen's Gambit, portrays the troubled DCI Rhys. The cast is rounded out by the esteemed Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland), who also features in a detective role.
The series is directed by Hettie Macdonald (Normal People) and Sam Miller (I May Destroy You), promising a high-calibre production.
What does the trailer reveal?
The official trailer, released earlier this month, sets the scene with Zara beginning a seemingly normal day at the office. The mood shifts dramatically when a gang wearing disturbing prosthetic masks storms the building, taking hostages.
Viewers see Luke in a perilous situation, with Zara stepping up to save lives with quick thinking. However, the danger is far from over once the thieves escape. DCI Rhys is brought in to track them down, but Zara, rather than retreating to safety, actively involves herself in a dangerous quest for the truth.
A chilling moment in the preview shows Rhys visiting Zara's mother, who warns him about her daughter's unstable nature, hinting at the extreme lengths Zara will go to for answers.
Filming for Steal began in London in May 2024, with the first look at Turner in character emerging in November. The stage is now set for this gripping, star-studded heist drama to hit screens worldwide this month.
