The critically acclaimed historical drama Shogun, hailed as one of the best television shows of the decade, has received a major update for its highly anticipated second season on Disney+.
Major Production and Cast Updates
FX and Disney+ have confirmed that production for the sophomore season of the epic period drama will officially commence in January 2025. Filming is set to take place in Vancouver, Canada.
In a thrilling new development, Japanese actor and J-pop star Ren Meguro, a member of the nine-piece boy band Snow Man, has joined the ensemble cast. He will take on the role of Kazutada in the new season.
Meguro expressed his honour at joining the production, stating he was profoundly moved by the series' unique and grand portrayal of Japan and felt a compelling urge to be part of it.
Returning Stars and New Narrative Direction
The award-winning lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are confirmed to reprise their roles as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and English sailor John Blackthorne, respectively.
They will be joined by returning cast members including Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba, Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro, Hiroto Kanai as Omi, and Yoriko Doguchi as Kiri.
The new season will mark a significant departure from the source material. The plot will be set ten years after the events of the first season, exploring the consequences of its climax. This includes Lord Toranaga's strengthening grip on authority and the Battle of Sekigahara.
A Legacy of Critical Acclaim
The first season of Shogun, which premiered worldwide in February 2024, is adapted from James Clavell's 1975 best-selling novel.
It achieved a monumental feat at the Emmy Awards, securing a record-breaking 18 awards – the highest tally ever for a single season. The honours included Outstanding Drama Series, lead actor for Cosmo Jarvis, and a historic win for Anna Sawai as the first Asian performer to claim the prize for lead actress.
The series also boasts a near-perfect 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with fans and critics praising it as a masterpiece. One viewer called it one of the best shows to debut this decade, while another commended its meticulous detail in set design and character plots.
Given that the original series required approximately ten months to film, it is strongly anticipated that viewers will not see the second instalment of Shogun until around 2027.
Shogun is available to stream on Disney+.
