Richard Osman Expresses Interest in Channel 4 Chat Show Following House of Games Departure

Richard Osman has openly discussed his interest in a potential career shift towards hosting a chat show on Channel 4, following his recent departure from the BBC quiz programme House of Games. This revelation comes just over a week after the 55-year-old television personality announced he would be leaving the show after what he described as "nine amazing years" of presenting.

A New Chapter After Nine Years on House of Games

The former Pointless co-host disclosed that he has filmed more than 800 episodes of House of Games since its inception in 2017. On his popular podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, Osman confirmed that the BBC plans to continue the programme with a new presenter, stating it would now be "somebody else's House of Games". With his role on the quiz show concluded, Osman is now exploring opportunities to diversify his television career beyond the quiz show format that has defined much of his work.

Channel 4 Chat Show Ambitions Revealed

In a candid conversation with his podcast co-host Marina Hyde, Osman expressed his openness to taking on a different type of TV project. He remarked, "Nobody who has any money in television wants to spend it on a chat show. That said, Channel 4, I would be interested in doing one. I'm free. I'm sort of free now. House of Games, my bit of it, is done and I like talking to people." This statement highlights his eagerness to engage in more conversational programming, despite the challenges he perceives in the genre.

Challenges and Innovative Ideas for Chat Shows

Osman went on to reveal that many "newly famous" stars frequently pitch similar TV show concepts, often proposing a "chat show with ordinary people" to producers. He admitted to harbouring doubts about his own suitability for such a role, telling Hyde, "I couldn't do it though, I'd be terrible at a chat show. It's really, really, really difficult to make a chat show." However, he suggested that a format focusing on everyday individuals could be more entertaining, noting, "I'd prefer to do a chat show with ordinary people, I think it would be more fun."

The Unrealised "Chat Show of Doom" Concept

Further elaborating on his creative ideas, Osman shared details of a past concept called the "Chat Show of Doom," which he particularly favoured. This innovative proposal involved having five guests on stage, with the audience voting off the most boring participant after each round. He described the structure: "So the first round would be 'give us an anecdote from your school days' and the second round would be 'bring on a friend'." Despite the intrigue of such ideas, Osman noted that they have never materialised, attributing this to a broader industry reluctance, as he said, "nobody wants a chat show."

As Richard Osman transitions from his long-standing role on House of Games, his hints at a potential move to Channel 4 for a chat show signal a possible new direction in his broadcasting career, blending his experience with a fresh focus on interactive and people-centric programming.
