Pixar's 'Hoppers' Soars to Number One in North American Box Office Debut
Disney and Pixar's latest animated adventure "Hoppers" has leaped to the top of the North American box office charts with an impressive opening weekend performance. According to studio estimates released on Sunday, the environmentally-themed family film earned $46 million in domestic ticket sales during its debut weekend.
Global Success for Original Animation
When combined with international showings, "Hoppers" achieved a remarkable $88 million global launch, marking the most successful opening for an original animated film since Pixar's "Coco" premiered in 2017. This represents a significant victory for Disney and Pixar, which has faced challenges with original content in recent years.
The film's strong performance comes as welcome news following last year's disappointing release of "Elio," which recorded Pixar's worst opening ever. While the studio has found recent success primarily with sequels and established franchises, "Hoppers" demonstrates that original storytelling can still resonate with audiences.
Critical and Audience Acclaim
"Hoppers" has received overwhelmingly positive responses from both critics and moviegoers. The film boasts a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned an A CinemaScore from audiences. According to PostTrak polling, 75% of viewers said they would "definitely recommend" the film, suggesting strong word-of-mouth potential for continued success.
Directed by Daniel Chong, the film follows a 19-year-old environmentalist who infiltrates the animal world in the body of a beaver. The voice cast features Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, and Kathy Najimy. With a reported production budget of $150 million, the film opened in approximately 4,000 locations across North America.
"This is a fantastic original film from the incredible team at Pixar, and it's wonderful to see audiences coming out with their friends and families to enjoy it together," said Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, in a statement celebrating the film's "tremendous launch."
Warner Bros.' 'The Bride!' Faces Disappointing Opening
In stark contrast to Pixar's success, Warner Bros.' R-rated reimagining of the Bride of Frankenstein story, "The Bride!" struggled significantly during its opening weekend. The film, starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, earned just $7.3 million from 3,304 domestic locations.
The production, which reportedly cost approximately $80 million to make before marketing expenses, received mixed to negative critical reviews and lackluster audience responses. The film currently holds a "rotten" 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned only a C+ CinemaScore from viewers.
International Performance and Production Challenges
International audiences provided little relief for "The Bride!", contributing just $6.3 million from markets outside the United States and Canada. This brought the film's global debut to a disappointing $13.6 million total.
The film experienced a bumpy path to theaters, with edits reportedly made following poor test screenings. Its release date was pushed back from September, possibly to avoid competition with Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein," which played in theaters last autumn before moving to Netflix.
"Unfortunately, we came in light," acknowledged Jeffrey Goldstein, who oversees domestic distribution for Warner Bros. "We have a tailored approach to our slate, investing strategically in talent, IP and original storytelling... and sometimes things just don't work out."
Warner Bros.' Broader Performance
Despite the disappointing performance of "The Bride!," Warner Bros. has experienced recent successes with other releases. The studio's adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" has surpassed $213 million globally, demonstrating the company's ability to produce commercially viable films.
Goldstein emphasized the studio's commitment to original storytelling despite the risks involved: "We're coming off an incredible run of nine No. 1 openings in a row, and in an increasingly 'risk-averse' business like ours, we believe the business is better served with studios taking bold swings on originals like this one."
Weekend Box Office Roundup
The weekend's box office results featured several notable performances:
- Paramount's "Scream 7" landed in second place during its second weekend with $17.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $93.4 million and global total to $149.5 million.
- Sony's "GOAT" claimed fourth place with $6.6 million.
- Warner Bros.' "Wuthering Heights" rounded out the top five with $3.8 million.
The contrasting fortunes of "Hoppers" and "The Bride!" highlight the unpredictable nature of the film industry, where family-friendly animation can outperform expensive genre reimaginings despite significant differences in target audiences and content ratings.
