"It's strange to say that, but if I go back there, it's to do something that feels different and has its own identity," he remarked.
Although Villeneuve expressed admiration for Herbert's extensive book series, he indicated no plans to direct further Dune films after this project. "I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books," he elaborated, suggesting the franchise could continue under different leadership. He acknowledged the subsequent novels present adaptation challenges and while not "closing the door" entirely, he has no intention of helming another Dune picture himself.
