Melania Trump Highlights Iran War Deaths at Military Mother's Day Event

First Lady Melania Trump appeared to leave her husband uncomfortable when she reminded a group of military mothers at the White House of the 13 U.S. service members who have died in the war he started with Iran more than two months ago.

White House Military Mother's Day Event

Speaking in the East Room at what the White House billed as a Military Mother's Day Event, Mrs. Trump recalled how she had been overwhelmed with feelings when she joined her husband at a dignified transfer ceremony marking the return of the dead service members to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware in March. As the president watched, she told the military mothers and other attendees that she often finds herself thinking about the brave people who make the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

“When I went to honor the fallen, fallen service members from the 103rd Sustainment Command at Dover Air Force Base last March, I realized that words cannot comfort the all consuming grief that family members — and mothers in particular — experience,” she said. “The loss is overwhelming. Although I understand the deep pride these families feel in their loved ones’ service to our great Republic, I cannot fathom the depth of their sorrow.”

First Lady's Remarks on Military Mothers

The first lady added that in this time of military conflict, it is military mothers who find themselves alone, awake with their entire thoughts in the darkest hours of the night. Continuing, she drew laughs from the crowd when she suggested that her husband’s empathy transcends his role as president and called him a caring leader who constantly remembers each and every American soldier is someone's child.

President Trump then took the podium to boast about the Iran war, his Cabinet, and the first lady's Amazon movie. The event, held in the East Room of the White House, was intended to honor military mothers but took a somber turn with Mrs. Trump's remarks.
