Patricia Routledge: Actress Who Brought Humanity to Eccentrics Dies at 96

Patricia Routledge, the versatile actress known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96. Her career spanned musicals, classics, and modern drama, with a defining ability to find humanity in eccentric characters.

Routledge's performances in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads were particularly acclaimed. In A Woman of No Importance, she portrayed a clerical worker facing hospitalised solitude, with critics comparing it to Beckett's Happy Days. In A Lady of Letters, she played a letter-writing busybody who finds companionship in jail.

Her stage work included musicals such as Darling of the Day (1968), for which she won a Tony, and Carousel (1992) at the National Theatre. She also appeared in Leonard Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and Scottish Opera's Candide.
