'Outstanding' Period Drama The Mill Streaming Free on Channel 4

The Mill, a critically acclaimed period drama based on real events at Quarry Bank Mill in Cheshire, is now streaming free on Channel 4. Viewers have dubbed the series 'outstanding', 'captivating', and a '10 star series', praising its authentic depiction of 1830s Britain and the Industrial Revolution.

A Hidden Gem for Period Drama Fans

The series explores themes reminiscent of beloved hits such as Call the Midwife, North and South, and Little Dorrit. Developed by Emily Dalton, who drew upon archival records from the National Trust Property, the show offers an unflinching examination of life during that era. It is rooted in genuine accounts and real people from the textile mill workers at Quarry Bank Mill, with some fictional characters and storylines interwoven.

The Mill was shot on location in Cheshire to ensure the most faithful representation of the stories being told. It was written by John Fay and directed by James Hawes across two seasons. The first series, set in 1830s Britain, comprises four episodes, while the second season, containing six episodes and broadcast in 2014, advances the narrative from 1838 to 1842.

Critical Acclaim and Fan Devotion

The Mill features Kerrie Hayes and Matthew McNulty in leading roles, supported by Donald Sumpter, Barbara Marten, Jamie Draven, Andrew Lee Potts, Rosilyn Ann Southgate, Katherine Rose Morley, Holly Lucas, and Sope Dirisu. Hayes earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Leading Actress for her performance.

One IMDB user review stated: "The Mill is a captivating historical series illustrating the draconian conditions experienced by the working classes in the Cotton Mills. It is exceptionally well written, casted, directed, filmed and delivered by a fine array of actors." Another viewer wrote: "I think that women may respond to this amazing drama, more than men...more's the pity. It addresses the kind of oppression women, children and the poor have faced throughout time."

Viewers Demand a Third Season

In 2014, Channel 4 axed the series, leaving the narrative unresolved. Devoted fans have expressed frustration, with one saying: "Addictive and compelling. A wonderful insight into life of a community of mill workers... So disappointed to hear there are to be no more seasons." Another viewer echoed: "Bring The Mill back for Season 3! This is so unfair, please make a 3rd season (or publish a book even!) so we know what happens to the characters."

The Mill is available to stream free on Channel 4 and with a subscription on Amazon Prime Video.
