Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated epic, The Odyssey, has released a new trailer that has sparked significant criticism from viewers, who have raised complaints about the actors' accents and modern-sounding dialogue.
Cast and Setting
The film, an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek poem, boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Tom Holland as Telemachus. Other notable actors such as Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron also feature in the production.
Accent Concerns
Viewers have particularly highlighted the American accents used by the cast as jarring for a story set in ancient Greece. Many have suggested that British accents would have been more appropriate for the historical setting, arguing that the current choices undermine the film's authenticity.
Dialogue Criticism
Specific lines of dialogue have been singled out for feeling anachronistic. Robert Pattinson's character, Antinous, says “daddy,” while Matt Damon's Odysseus exclaims “Let's Go!” These phrases have been criticised for being out of place in a historical epic, breaking the immersion for many audience members.
Nolan's Vision
Nolan, who previously won an Oscar for Oppenheimer, announced the adaptation in December 2024. He stated that he aims for audiences to experience the familiar story with a fresh perspective. The film is set for release on 17 July.
