Fans are hailing the new Netflix film 'Wonka' as a 'timeless masterpiece' and admitting it left them an 'emotional wreck'. The prequel to the 1971 classic 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' began streaming on the platform on June 16.
Directed by British filmmaker Paul King, known for the 'Paddington' films, 'Wonka' stars Timothée Chalamet as the young chocolatier. The cast includes Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa, alongside Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Matt Lucas.
The film explores the origins of Roald Dahl's iconic character, following a young and poor Willy Wonka as he arrives in Europe with dreams of becoming a famous chocolatier, only to face a corrupt cartel of rival businessmen.
Despite initial apprehension, the film has won over audiences, boasting an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% fan score. One fan described it as 'utter movie magic', praising the nods to the original film and Hugh Grant's performance as an Oompa-Loompa.
Another fan called it a 'cinematic triumph' and a 'wonderful reimagining of an old classic', while others admitted to being 'a bit of an emotional wreck' after watching, with tears rolling down their faces during several scenes.
