Marian Keyes Voices Optimism for Second Season of The Walsh Sisters
Irish author Marian Keyes has publicly expressed her aspirations for a second season of the BBC drama The Walsh Sisters, as the new series makes its debut on BBC One and iPlayer. The show brings to life Keyes' cherished novel series, which follows the tumultuous yet endearing dynamics of a family featuring five sisters, a devout mother, and a perplexed father.
A Dysfunctional Yet Lovable Family Comes to Life
Set in their hometown of Dublin, the drama centres on the five Walsh sisters: Rachel, portrayed by Caroline Menton; Anna, played by Louisa Harland; Maggie, embodied by Stefanie Preissner; Claire, acted by Danille Galligan; and Helen, brought to life by Máiréad Tyers. The narrative delves into their personal struggles, past traumas, familial bonds, friendships, and the unpredictable journey through their twenties and thirties.
The series synopsis highlights: "They don’t always get along, but they always have each other’s backs. Five Irish sisters navigate heartbreak, grudges and glorious chaos – inspired by Marian Keyes’s bestsellers." The BBC further elaborates that this sisterhood is filled with inside jokes, inherited resentments, and lingering wounds, yet their shared DNA, history, and love for power ballads unite them against challenges like heartbreak, grief, addiction, and parenthood.
Keyes' Enthusiasm for Future Seasons
Ahead of the series premiere, Marian Keyes hinted at her desire for a second season, humorously remarking, "I kind of feel like I’ve overdosed on my luck," as she reflected on the lengthy process to bring the series to fruition, with the first book published back in 1995. She added a specific hope for season two, saying, "There’s a part in Rachel’s Holiday, if the second series gets made… Daddy Walsh joins a local am-dram group, which is doing Oklahoma, and he method acts his way to his rehearsals and all, and he talks in an Oklahoma accent and wears a cowboy hat. I would give anything for that to be made, I would find that so, so funny."
Cast and Crew Share Their Aspirations
Stefanie Preissner, who both wrote the series and plays Maggie, echoed Keyes' sentiments, stating, "I’m hoping by the end of episode six, there’s still more, it’s not stuff that we can’t make." She playfully urged viewers, "Even if you didn’t enjoy it, turn on your televisions when it’s on, download it once it’s on iPlayer, even if you don’t like it, just have it on in the background, so we can get through more of the books!"
Emotional Journey from Page to Screen
Marian Keyes, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, shared her emotional reaction to seeing her characters embodied by actors. In a BBC press pack, she said, "I cannot put words on it. It's so weird to think that these people that came from my head are now embodied by actual humans. Seeing the filming, I felt so emotional, and so has my husband, because the actors that are playing the sisters are so fully realised. Everything from their accents to the clothes they wear to their body language is unique. It's a strange and overwhelmingly wonderful feeling. It's just lovely. It is like magic. The words were in my head, and now they are actual people. It's mad and gorgeous."
She added, "I can't tell you how excited I am about seeing my books being adapted into a TV series. Excited isn't even the word, I feel so honoured. The whole thing is surreal. These things lived in my head for so long, and now to see actual people saying some of the words I wrote. I just feel really happy about it. Everything about this has been joyous. There hasn't been a single thing that has made me disappointed in any way. All of it is just hugely uplifting and really thrilling."
The Walsh Sisters premiered on BBC One on Saturday at 9.15pm and is available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
