The beloved stars of the iconic sitcom Malcolm in the Middle have reunited on set, filming the show's long-awaited revival a quarter of a century after its original premiere. Fans will be stunned to see how the actors have transformed since the show's 2000 debut.
A Surprise Reunion Snap Sparks Excitement
Ahead of the reboot's release, lead actor Frankie Muniz, now 40, shared a candid picture against studio advice. The photo featured him with his on-screen brothers, Justin Berfield (Reese), 39, and Christopher Masterson (Francis), 45. Muniz captioned the post: 'I was told not to post this yet... I'm just too excited for y'all to see the new episodes and I miss my brothers.'
The image prompted an immediate reaction online, with one fan humorously noting, 'Why isn't Malcolm in the middle?' The actors' dramatically changed appearances since the show's heyday in the early 2000s became a major talking point, with many commenting they were almost completely unrecognisable.
What We Know About 'Life's Still Unfair'
The reboot, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, was officially announced in December 2024. It will consist of a four-episode revival streaming on Hulu and Disney+. The synopsis reveals the plot: 'After shielding himself and his daughter from his family for over a decade, Malcolm is dragged back into their orbit when Hal and Lois demand his presence at their 40th anniversary party.'
Critically, the revival will see the return of the iconic parental duo. Bryan Cranston, 69, and Jane Kaczmarek, 70, are confirmed to reprise their roles as Hal and Lois. The cast also includes Kiana Madeira as Malcolm's girlfriend and newcomers Vaughan Murrae and Keeley Karsten.
One Notable Absence: Dewey is Recast
Not all original cast members are returning. Notably absent from the reunion photo and the show's first trailer is Erik Per Sullivan, who played the beloved youngest brother, Dewey. Bryan Cranston revealed on a podcast that Sullivan, who is reportedly pursuing a master's degree at Harvard, chose not to be involved in the project.
The role of Dewey has been recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping into the shoes. This decision disappointed a segment of fans, who took to social media to express their heartache. Comments ranged from 'Where's Dewey?' to critiques that the character should have been written out rather than recast.
Frankie Muniz has expressed immense enthusiasm for the project, stating on a podcast: 'I'm not exaggerating when I say filming this reboot, like I loved it so much, way more than I ever thought I could have.'
Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair will be available to stream on Disney+ in the UK from April 10.
