Louisa Harland Opens Up About Emotional Challenges in The Walsh Sisters Role

Star of the highly anticipated new BBC drama The Walsh Sisters, Louisa Harland, has candidly shared the difficulties she faced while portraying her character's profound grief storyline. The Derry Girls actress, who plays Anna Walsh in the adaptation of Marian Keyes' beloved novel series, revealed that certain scenes were particularly challenging to perform.

Navigating Complex Family Dynamics and Personal Struggles

The series brings to life the story of five Irish sisters from a dysfunctional yet deeply lovable family, featuring a devout mother and a bemused father. Set in their Dublin hometown, the drama follows Anna alongside her sisters Rachel (played by Caroline Menton), Maggie (Stefanie Preissner), Claire (Danielle Galligan) and Helen (Máiréad Tyers) as they navigate personal dramas, past traumas, family relationships, friendships, and the turbulent experiences of their twenties and thirties.

The official synopsis describes the series as: "Five Irish sisters navigate heartbreak, grudges and glorious chaos – inspired by Marian Keyes's bestsellers. They don't always get along, but they always have each other's backs."

The BBC further elaborates: "This is a sisterhood full of in-jokes, hand-me-down resentments and more than a few old wounds. But their DNA, history and shared love of power ballads keep the Walsh sisters together in the face of heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood."

Anna's Harrowing Grief Journey

Anna's character undergoes a particularly devastating storyline as she confronts overwhelming grief following the horrific death of her new fiancé. After falling deeply in love and planning her future with him, Anna is left grappling with self-blame for the tragic accident and struggling to envision how she can possibly move forward with her life.

Ahead of the series premiere on BBC iPlayer, Louisa told press including Reach PLC: "Unlike other subjects, I think grief is something that unfortunately a lot of people have gone through, and it's something that you experience in different ways."

She continued: "I was very lucky to have an incredible director who trusted me and loved the story, and we had such great scripts from books to screenplays. I ran with the flow everyday but I found it particularly hard on days to shake it off. I think we all did with our characters, but it's such an honour to be one of The Walsh Sisters."

Finding Herself in Anna Walsh

In promotional materials for the new series, Louisa expressed her delight at playing Anna, stating: "Playing Anna Walsh is probably the closest I've got to playing myself. Anna, as Marian Keyes said, is probably the most empathetic of all sisters, and she probably goes through the most harrowing time out of all the sisters."

She emphasized: "Although each sister's issues are as important as the next. I loved everything about playing Anna Walsh, and I love being a Walsh."

The actress further explained the emotional complexity of her role: "There were many scenes that I found challenging for loads of different reasons. Something Marian does so well is the blend of humour and tragedy. I think as Irish people, we use humour to get through tragedy, and I think that's apparent in her books, and I think that's apparent in our show."
