ITV Drama The Lady Airs Tonight Exploring Sarah Ferguson's Bond with Murderer
ITV's four-part drama The Lady premieres tonight, delving into the remarkable life of Jane Andrews, a former royal dresser for Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, who was convicted of murder in 2001. The series traces Jane's journey from the opulent halls of Buckingham Palace to HM Prison Bullwood Hall, following her conviction for stabbing her partner Thomas Cressman to death while he slept.
Actress Mia McKenna-Bruce on Portraying Jane Andrews
Actress Mia McKenna-Bruce, who plays Jane Andrews in the drama, admitted she deliberately avoided researching the real-life case before filming. "I didn't watch any documentaries," the 28-year-old explained. "I made a decision early on that I wanted to work with what writer Debbie O'Malley had created. I didn't want to come in with my own biases or ideas."
Despite their differences – Mia describes herself as bubbly and upbeat compared to her portrayal of Jane – she found elements of Jane's story that resonated personally. "When we first meet Jane, she's someone that's full of hope and idealises wanting to escape the life she has to live in a palace," Mia said. "As a young girl, I also had dreams like that – this fairy tale."
From Palace Dreams to Prison Reality
The drama follows Jane's trajectory from her teenage years in Grimsby, where she struggled with mental health issues, to her employment as Sarah Ferguson's dresser in 1988. Her fairy tale existence unravels when her marriage collapses and she is dismissed by the Duchess after nine years of service.
Jane's life takes another turn when she enters a relationship with charismatic businessman Thomas Cressman, played by Ed Speelers. However, their complicated romance ends in tragedy with Thomas murdered and Jane sentenced to life imprisonment. The real Jane Andrews was released from prison in 2019 but chose not to be directly involved in the drama's production.
Writer Debbie O'Malley on Approaching Sensitive Material
Writer Debbie O'Malley explained the careful approach taken with the real-life figures involved. "Speaking with Jane was something that was always a possibility and we communicated with her through her legal team," she said. "That's what she was comfortable with."
Ed Speelers, who portrays Thomas Cressman, did have the opportunity to speak with Thomas's brother Rick while preparing for his role. "I was presented with the opportunity to speak to Tommy's brother and some of his friends," the 37-year-old actor revealed. "He was incredibly warm, incredibly open. The sensitivity around that has been handled brilliantly by everybody involved."
Natalie Dormer's Transformation into Sarah Ferguson
Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer takes on the role of Sarah Ferguson, with Mia McKenna-Bruce expressing amazement at her transformation. "She listened to interviews with Sarah and worked out her jaw placement, how to talk," Mia observed. "They sounded the same and it was fascinating for me to watch her do that."
The drama focuses particularly on the intense friendship between Jane and Sarah, with Jane becoming increasingly consumed by the Duchess's lavish lifestyle. "Sarah does become her whole life," Mia explained. "She gets wrapped up in that world then loses it all. It's fascinating to see that human behaviour."
On-Screen Chemistry and Off-Screen Bonding
Ed Speelers and Mia McKenna-Bruce had never worked together before and were immediately thrust into intense scenes portraying Jane and Thomas's turbulent relationship. Ed credited Mia with maintaining a positive atmosphere during challenging moments. "Through her positivity and being a bundle of energy, Mia had an ability just to step into something like there's no care in the world," he said.
The actors developed a strong bond off camera as well. "There was a lot of music, playing chess, eating chocolate, talking about kids," Mia recalled. "Working with Ed and everyone on this job really was just magic."
When asked about potential reactions from the real-life individuals portrayed in the drama, Ed Speelers emphasized the creative nature of their work. "It's our piece and the role of Tommy is a depiction we've created," he stated. "For me, as an actor, you want the opportunity to put these fully-pledged humans together. It comes down to the beauty in the script and the story we're telling."
